New Year’s Resolutions
by John Isaacs
At the beginning of each New Year I take the opportunity to examine my life from the standpoint of how faithful I have been to live the commitments I have made to God, others, and myself.
· Am I keeping myself healthy spiritually? (prayer, devotions, Bible study, hearing from God, and etc.)
· Am I keeping myself healthy emotionally? (rest, recreation, stress management, and etc.)
· Am I keeping myself healthy physically? (exercise, diet, weight management, and etc.)
· Am I keeping myself healthy financially? (tithing, debt management, savings, budgeting, and etc.)
· Am I keeping myself healthy in all relationships? (loving, forgiving, sacrificing, initiating, and etc.)
· Am I fulfilling God’s purpose for my life? (doing what He has called me to do)
· Am I being the loving and supportive husband I want to be?
· Am I being the loving and supportive parent I want to be?
· Am I being the loving and supportive friend I want to be?
· Am I being the neighbor I want to be?
Following a honest self-appraisal, I begin making my New Year’s resolutions. I determine to do a better job living the life style and making the right choices that are consistent with the commitments I have made.
Is this annual exercise helpful? Well, I believe it is important to be regularly evaluating the integrity of how I am living my life in relationship to the commitments I have made. The New Year is an annual reminder to do this self-evaluation.
I don’t seem to ever get an A+ on my self-appraisal, but I have noticed that over the years my scores keep steadily improving. So, is this annual exercise helpful? Absolutely! Will I end 2012 with all “A’s” across the board? No way! But, if I end 2012 having done a little better than I did in 2011 then I believe it will have been a successful year.
I believe in the spiritual reality that a man reaps what he sows (Galatians 6:7). If we don’t make personal commitments to live our lives to please God by living it His way, then we will not reap the rich rewards He has promised. They might not materialize right away, but I believe as I continue to sow the right seeds in all the above areas of my life, I will reap God’s rich rewards and experience His abundant blessings.
